In the Alta Val Bormida, Province of Cuneo, is Roccavignale, a small village of about 750 people. The municipality belongs to the province of Savona and covers an area of 17.5 square kilometres, divided by four settlements: Strada, Camponuovo, Pianissolo and Valzemola. The territory is 75 per cent woodland and the altitude is between 420 and 964 metres above sea level.
Historical background
According to local sources, Rocca Vineal owes its name to the abundance of vineyards . Traces of settlement date back to the Neolithic times, as evidenced by the burial mound with three dolmens found at Piana delle Ghiare. The first official mention of the municipality dates to 998. Initially it used to belong to the Del Carretto marquisate, who built a castle as a defensive strategy. From 1686 it became a fief of the Duke of Aarschot, Leopold Philip d’Arenberg, together with Millesimo, and from 1713 to 1738 it became a possession of the Duke of Savoy. In 1799 it suffered, like other nearby villages in the Bormida Valley, the sacking and demolition of the Del Carretto castle by Napoleon Bonaparte’s French troops. Annexed by the Kingdom of Sardinia, it was incorporated into the subsequent Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Finally , it was it was constituted to the Province of Savona.
What to to see in Roccavignale
If you wish to visit this, the best way to do so is to rent a vehicle. Its convenient and economical . In fact, it can be easily reached by car. You have to take the Millesimo tollgate on the A6 motorway.! Arriving in Roccavignale, you will be able to discover the remains of an imposing castle that overlooks two artificial lakes with bright green waters, and a dolmen. Here you can also visit the old parish church of S. Eugenio. You also get the opportunity to sit on the giant blue bench, which is a part of the Big Bench project.
